The Scarlet Letter: Rough Draft
Now in the 21-first century, women in society have come a long way. Women have changed and evolved over the past 100 years from being just a housewife, with only wifely duties, to owning and running corporations. Women feel capable and independent, we are given the freedom and have the same opportunities as men. It is daunting to learn that this wasn’t always the case. There was a time when women weren’t given the right to work, to vote, go to school, work outside their household, earn the same wages as men, become any profession they chose to be, practice another religion or marry whomever they loved. In the novel The Scarlett Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne,  Hester Prynne defies society and her community by having a secret affair, a child out of wedlock, and  she becomes an outcast. The novel takes place during the 17th century, with the Puritans that have immigrated to America. If Hester Prynne was alive today and made the same mistakes she made in The Scarlett Letter, she would not have been treated like she was then. My contemporary view dramatically changes my perspective of the novel, therefore not agreeing with Hester’s punishment and treatment by the Puritans.
Through out reading The Scarlet Letter, I felt completely bad for Hester Prynne. Though I don’t agree that adultery is right, I don’t believe Hester was a bad person. For Someone who might have read the novel in the early 19th century might have disagreed with me. Clearly today adultery is not punished at all like Hester Prynne was punished; that was due to the Puritans. The Puritans were religious colony who came to America because they believed that the church of England wasn’t pure, and they wanted to purify it by segregating themselves. The Puritans believed in pre-determination which ment that if you were good, you would always be good and if you were evil, you would always be evil so to speak. They basically didn’t believe that God was merciful enough to forgive sinners; such as Hester. They also believed that evil was always around and the devil in particular. Lurking in other people ready to take others as followers. Today the Puritans would be viewed as religious extremists. Obviously I don’t agree with their religious perspectives. I have been raised Catholic and believe sort of the opposite. God forgives all sinners, and looks at the good in all his people. That definitely affects my perspective on the Puritans and how I felt about the whole Hester situation.

Difficulty Paper #2

Difficulty Paper #2

Coincidentally I watched the movie Easy A today. Which very loosely makes reference to The Scarlett Letter. What amused me about watching the movie and finishing the book was that yet again exemplifies the dramatic change in the way our culture has changed from punishing adultery and “sleeping around” to embracing it. I don’t know how I feel about the The Scarlett Letter. I had a really hard time reading the book, and understanding it, but though many may consider it to be a sort of love story, I really beg to differ. On one hand Hester is shown as a good, strong, endearing women, who unfortunalty lives a very difficult life, because of one mistake or act of love with Reverend Dimmesdale. But on the other, the two never end up happily together, and Hester really never seems to catch a break. I felt like it wasn’t a love story at all, just a very sad situation. I also don’t really know how I feel about Dimmesdale. Many times in the novel he acts as cruel as the other townspeople to Hester and Pearl, and at other times I just felt sorry for him because he was being eaten up so much about his sin, but conflicted on trying to do the right thing and confess his sin. In the end he does the right thing but, it seems to me like its just a little too late. The one thing I did like about the book was learning about the Puritan society and how extreme they actually were. I also realized while reading The Scarlett Letter that though we now live in the 21 first century, and things have completely evolved for the majority of the population, their are still some countries that believe in a similar manner to the Puritans. In my last semester English class, we studied Afghanistan. A rather odd topic, but very much enlightening and interesting culture to read and learn about. Many of the women in Afghanistan today are still being treated by society and men very similarly to Hester. It is definitely a sad situation for women to be treated and punished in such a harsh and unnecessary manner. And I think that is another aspect of the Scarlett letter that made it so difficult for me to read. I just felt so bad for Hester and Pearl, and I completely and do not agree with the any kind of abuse towards women; deserving and undeserving. Though Hester was completely guilty of her sin, she clearly was not an evil person; unlike Chillingworth. Hester tried to do good in the midst of her shame and embarrassment, and just like every human, fell into temptation. The Puritan society was not a forgiving one, and I struggle with believing the Puritans were pure and religious people with all the evil and unforgiving ways they treated Hester.

Difficulty Paper #1

Difficulty Paper #1

The Scarlett letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne, is quite a difficult book to read. It has been very hard for me to read the book because I find the language very difficult to understand. Though I have only read a couple of chapters, I’ve found that I have had to read some pages of the book over and over again to understand and comprehend what is going on in the novel. Hester Prynne is the main character of the novel and the story takes place around her being punished for being an adulteress and having a child out of wedlock. The story takes place in Boston during the 17th century. The puritans at that time have left England not only to practice their religion freely in the new world but also because they felt the church of England was impure. The Puritans do interest me in the novel because they are so different and extreme. That is one aspect of the novel I do find interesting is to see and compare how much our society has changed over the past couple hundred years. I feel sorry for Hester Prynne in many ways, not only because she is banished and humiliated by society but also because she now has to raise a daughter and be constantly reminded of her crime. Not only will Hester be living with her mistake but also her daughter pearl will as well. I don’t think Hester is a bad person though, like the Puritans believe so. What Hester did may not seem right to the eyes of many, I don’t think committing adultery is right, but I don’t think being punished as harshly as Hester is right either. I will just have to continue to read the novel and try to understand and comprehend the rest of this story.

Idea Paper: Reader Response Theory Draft on Sonny

Throughout our lives we all experience trials and tribulations. Good and bad times shape us into the individuals we become. We all may take different paths, but we all strive towards one goal; and that is to be happy. Even in the darkest of times we find the smallest things can change a situation into an experience. In The Flowers by Dagoberto Gilb, Sonny is a young man living in a very tough neighborhood and living a tough life. Sonny has always been on his own, taking care of himself and trying to be a tough guy. Though Sonny lives in a neighborhood full of violence, racism, drugs, alcohol, and surrounded by bad influence; Sonny manages to keep out of trouble and though he struggles with right and wrong, he always manages to take the right path.

Sonny seems very passive about his mom marrying Cloyd at first, and he never really expresses his feelings openly with his mother even though her decisions dramatically affect him.
“I was so mad at her for letting him get away with it. I mean, I could understand why a dog shouldn’t live inside an apartment with no yard, but couldn’t she at least fight this dude a little about it? If she didn’t care how I felt, didn’t she care any about Goof? Didn’t she miss Goofy a little? Didn’t she think I would?” (37).
Sonny is clearly devastated that Cloyd got rid of Goofy. Goofy was the one constant thing he had in his life; the one thing that could make him happy. Sylvia; Sonny’s mother passively explains the situation to Sonny and for the first time in the novel we see Sonny open up about how he feels not only about Goofy being gone but also Cloyd and his mother. Sonny has always seem to have a passive relationship with his mother even though he feels a lot of anger and resentment towards her, he never wants to express his true feelings maybe because he doesn’t want his relationship with his mother to end up like the relationship his mother and sister have. I can understand why Sonny feels the way he feels. He tries to make his relationship simple with his mom but he finds himself constantly frustrated with her, but makes it seem so ritual. He knows that his mom is the way she is, and she is not going to change. It is a difficult situation to be in but I can relate to Sonny’s dilemma. Some parents and their rules and beliefs will never change as much as you may disagree with them. Sometimes you know the best way to avoid conflict is to just avoid the confrontation entirely. Sonny seems to keep that same idea about his mom and her decisions.

Week Four: Prediction of what Sonny will do with the money.

What I think Sonny is going to do with the money is maybe use it to runaway from Cloyd. He knows his mom isn’t happy so he may just get fed up and let her know they can leave Cloyd and get away. Sylvia is strange though because she goes out all the time and supposedly spending all this money shopping, but we always hear her complain about Cloyd is such a tight person. So maybe Sonny will use the money to get away from both of them. Sonny is obviously a good kid, but he tends to do things on a whim, so maybe when he is finally fed up with the whole situation he will runaway himself.
If I were in Sonny’s position, I would probably confront my mom and ask her what she does when she goes out all the time, maybe try to build a closer relationship with her and try to convince her to leave Cloyd and live on our own once again. I would use the money to help us leave Cloyd and get our own place. I really feel sorry for Sonny, because as much as he is unhappy living the way he is, he seems to have no plans of escaping and has just accepted that life was just going to be the way it is. I wouldn’t be able to live in a situation like Sonny, and I would probably do everything I could to change my situation. I just could not stand to live in such a negative environment like Sonny’s. I hate negativity, and Sonny is surrounded by not only negativity but racism, anger, abuse, and violence. It in no way is suitable for him to live and be exposed too. I guess we can look at some sort of positivity in Sonny’s situation, and though he is surrounded by all that negative energy, he is definitely going to learn and realize it is a life changing experience, and shaping the man that he will one day become. That something I would do if I were In Sonny’s position as well. Though it may not be a realization right away, Sonny will realize it sooner or later. Though his experiences and challenging childhood will hurt him in some ways, they will make him a better person in the end.

Week 3: Pink and Prediction

Pink is definitely an interesting character. I don’t know whether he is a good or bad character, but I don’t think I completely trust him. Though Cloyd has made it very obvious he doesn’t trust or like Pink, Sonny still continues to interact with him. Maybe part of that reason is to not only to show Cloyd he doesn’t care for his opinion but also because he enjoys Pink’s company. I think the significance of Pink in the novel is that there is a lot of tension arising between all the characters; especially between Sonny, Sylvia, and Cloyd. I think Pink may be the character to set off the tension between Sonny and Cloyd especially. Even though Pink sounds like a nice guy, he has other priorities, and I have a feeling he may be the first to get Sonny into trouble. Not only with Cloyd and Sylvia but also the law. I didn’t think Sonny did the right thing in taking the keys from Pink, he should have stayed completely out of the situation because I just sense trouble with that car.
I feel like all the tension between all the characters living in Los Flores is going to erupt in the end. Sonny has been in many difficult and compromising positions while living at Los Flores, but I feel like even he senses the change to come. “It was that I didn’t think we would be living very long at Los Flores” (134). In the last couple pages of this weeks reading I also noticed a change in Sonny. He has become more restless and desperate and even stooped so slow as to brawling with an old man and stealing his wallet. Though Sonny attempts to put on a strong and brave front, deep down he is just a kid living in a very vulgar, intense, adult playground. He hides his emotions well, but he is hurting and suffering inside. I feel sorry for Sonny, and want someone to give him the love and attention he needs. I wish his mother realized that she is doing more hurt to him then help, and I wish that Sonny finds something in his life that truly makes him happy and his life fulfilling. I see Sonny in the end of the novel finding and realizing that there is meaning to all his troubles and experiences living in Los Flores. Sonny is an observer and intelligent thinker, he just needs to apply his strengths towards something fulfilling and I really hope to see him succeed rather then fail, even though everyone expects him too.
